Elementary (Grades 1-5)
First Place: Travis Beckley
5th Grade, Northside Elementary School
Shelbyville, Kentucky
Northside Elementary School, Shelbyville: - "Instead of tearing Northside down they should make it into help classes for kids who have problems. It is a good location. The students could walk to many nice places. Also everything in walking distance is educational."
Second Place: Samantha Jo Wilburn
4th Grade, Carter Elementary School
Carter, Kentucky
Olive Hill High School: - "First of all, this building is a historical monument. It was built in 1929. The 103 steps that lead up to this building from the center of Olive Hill is the main fascination of anyone who journeys through this small town."
Third Place: Olivia Gatten
5th Grade, Sturgis Elementary School
Sturgis, Kentucky
Camp Breckenridge: - "After telling you about the history involved in this building, I would also like to tell you a little about the museum itself. It has highly waxed floors on the inside that sparkle and shine when you look at them for the upstairs, indoor balcony."
Middle School (Grades 6-8)
First Place: Julita Elaine Nance
8th Grade, Washington County High School
Springfield, Kentucky
Rosenwald Schools: -"If it were not for the Rosenwald School I would not have received an education. The nearest school for blacks was located in Frankfort Kentucky and my mother refused to allow me to live so far away from home."
Second Place: Rachel Banta
North Oldham Middle School
LaGrange, Kentucky
Westport School: -" There were eight grades taught there, and only one teacher. Her name was Miss Mae Esters. She began each day by teaching the first graders, and ending with the eight graders. It was common throughout the day for the older children to tutor the younger ones."
Third Place: Jessica Creek
Monroe County Middle School
Tompkinsville, Kentucky
Free-Town Church: -"In an interview with the caretaker of this church, he mentioned that his grandparents were part of the many slaves that were freed by Howard. After being freed, they stayed on the land known as Free-Town."
High School (Grades 9-12)
First Place: Joshua Powell
11th Grade, Bullitt Central High School
Shephardsville, Kentucky
Old Shephardsville Cemetery: -" Though it had been abandoned well over one hundred years all is not lost. At one time there were as many as three hundred monuments on the site, last count (made fifty years ago) turned up on hundred fifty. All that are left have managed to have survived a multitude of floods, vandals, being consumed by the forest, and a great many years of exposure to the elements."
Second Place: Megan Graves
10th Grade, Conner High School
Hebron, Kentucky
The Allie Corn House: - "It's a perfect example of Victorian architecture. Our home is a "Queen Ann Victorian," a specific style of Victorian houses. The Victorian Age lasted from around 1870 to 1920. During this time, buildings had outstanding architecture."
Third Place: Amy Martin
10th Grade, Menifee County High School
Frenchburg, Kentucky
Goosetown School: -"This educational site fit the same description as most of the schoolhouses in the area. It was constructed of a wooden frame with the front door facing the road or path, consisted of three windows on each side, and a painted blackboard across the back of the classroom." |
